“The information disseminated by the Addis Ababa Revenue Bureau has defamed the auditing profession and has caused professional losses by undermining the credibility of its professionals,” professional associations have asked the bureau to deny the matter.
The information disseminated by the media that the Addis Ababa Revenue Bureau has submitted false accounting reports by understating and concealing income tax and that action should be taken against them has caused great losses to the auditing profession, three accounting and auditors’ associations have said.
It is recalled that the Addis Ababa Revenue Bureau recently said that it had discovered that 36,729 tax returns were submitted by understating and concealing income last year alone.
Accordingly, it is recalled that we previously reported that the Board requested that the Board take action against 824 out of 863 accountants and auditors licensed by the Accounting and Auditing Board of Ethiopia, which submitted their financial reports in a manner that was misleading and concealed.
Following this, the Ethiopian Accountants and Auditors Association, the Association of External Auditors and the Accounting Society of Ethiopia, which are professional associations, issued a statement saying that the alleged error was not verified by the Board and that it was inappropriate to broadcast the information to the media and that it had put the profession in jeopardy.
In their statement, the associations stated that they had no objection to the request submitted by the Revenue Bureau to the Board for the professionals to be punished, but that the manner in which it was broadcast to the media was misleading and that the Bureau should issue a rebuttal; They requested that the information regarding the matter be deleted from the media and the office’s communication systems.
They also requested that the Ethiopian Accounting and Auditing Board, based on the request submitted to it by the Tax Bureau, make public the results of its investigation.
In their joint statement, the associations said that the matter had caused the auditing profession to suffer losses after it was reported in the media, but they did not elaborate on the extent of the professional losses that had been incurred.
