A mandatory directive to control the emission levels of vehicles in Ethiopia is set to be implemented within two months to prevent air pollution caused by vehicle exhaust.

The directive, prepared by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics in March this year, is said to require vehicles to use technology that controls this to prevent environmental pollution caused by vehicle exhaust.

When the directive comes into effect, it is said that in order to obtain an annual technical inspection certificate, vehicles must be equipped with modern technology that reduces exhaust gas emissions or the vehicle’s exhaust gas emissions must not exceed the set standards.

TBK Trading said that it is currently the only company to import this technology in Ethiopia; the company is said to have imported Ethiopia’s first licensed fuel-saving and emission-reducing device from Taiwan-based nanotechnology company Molotech Group.

The company introduced the device yesterday at the Skylight Hotel.

The Ethiopian Standards Institute has issued a mandatory standard to control vehicle emissions to prevent health hazards caused by vehicle emissions, said Ato Assefa Hadis, Advisor to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, Transport Services and Control Sector.

Ato Assefa said that the vehicle emission control, which is expected to be implemented in two months, contains various detailed issues, including the mandatory adjustment of emission levels to meet the annual vehicle technical inspection, according to Ato Assefa.

The directive is in effect and is said to reduce air pollution, improve fuel consumption and help reduce accidents caused by technical defects in vehicles.

According to Ato Bekele Mamo, Deputy Founder and Technical Director of TBK Trading, which is importing and putting into service a device called Green Tech that controls emission levels to Ethiopia, the device will help reduce fuel consumption in addition to reducing vehicle emissions.

They said it can last up to ten years.

The device, which is said to help reduce vehicle emissions, is said to be easily inserted into the fuel tank and is said to reduce air emissions by 80 percent and fuel consumption by 30 percent. We have heard that the device is available for sale for between 15,000 and 50,000 birr, depending on the size of the vehicle's fuel tank.
