Yewef Gojo, every Monday to Friday @7:00PM on Kana TV.
It has been almost two and a half years since the official establishment of the Dire Dawa Free Trade Zone.
We have heard that the legal frameworks that allow for the start of operations and the infrastructures have been mostly completed in the past six months.
It is also reported that about 30 investors have signed contracts to operate in the free trade zone so far.
It has been almost two and a half years since the government decided to convert the former Dire Dawa Industrial Park into a free trade zone.
The legal frameworks that allow for the start of operations and the infrastructures that allow for the start of operations of the free trade zone have been prepared and the infrastructures have been completed and the operations have started in the past six months, said Ato Fitsum Ketema, Chief Executive Officer of the Industrial Parks Development Corporation.
He said that there are currently investors who have taken up space to operate in the free trade zone and have exported their products.
Ato Fitsum told us that all investors who have signed contracts to work in the free trade zone are under strong supervision and support from the government so that they can start working as soon as possible.
He said that they are also continuously informing them about the opportunities and incentives available.
Since a free trade zone is considered a business environment with low tariffs and taxes, it is also said to be free of trade barriers.
Ato Fitsum told us that the Dire Dawa Free Trade Zone is where products are transported directly from the port of Djibouti and shipped to their next destination.
He added that since products are transported to the free trade zone without waiting at the port of Djibouti, there will be no shortage of products and price increases that are often encountered.
If investors supply the products they unload in the free trade zone to the domestic market, they will pay taxes; If they send them back abroad, they are said to be sent there without paying any duties or taxes.
The Dire Dawa Free Trade Zone is one of the ten special economic zones in Ethiopia.
These ten special economic zones were previously industrial parks.
Ato Fitsum recalled that when they were industrial parks, they focused on only one sector, such as textiles, IT, etc.
But after becoming a special economic zone, we heard that they were organized so that they could work in two or three sectors together.
