The irrigated wheat crop is being harvested in the Afar region

The Animal, Agriculture and Natural Resources Development Office of the region has announced that three zones in Kuta have been harvested for irrigated lowland wheat.
This year, 15,000 hectares of land in three irrigation development clusters in the region are planned to be cultivated and put into operation, according to the deputy head of the office, Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed.
He explained that 8 thousand 557 hectares of land in Awisi Rasu, Kwa Rasu and Hari Rasu in the region were cultivated in Kuta through irrigation system.
Ato Ibrahim added that the wheat crop that has been irrigated in all three zones in Kuta is currently being harvested by combine harvesters.
He said 43 investors, 170 semi-pastoralists and 330 youths organized in associations participated in the irrigation wheat development.
Ato Ibrahim said that 675 thousand quintals of wheat production is expected from the irrigation wheat cultivation and he mentioned that the lack of supply of inputs for production enhancement is not fully implemented for the plan.
He said that in order to avoid shortage of the best seeds for the future cultivation of lowland irrigated wheat, breeding of the best seeds is being done in cooperation with the Wer Agriculture Research Institute and other stakeholders on 470 hectares of land.
Awol Abdu, the chief administrator of Dubti district in the Awisi zone of the region, said that we have to grow wheat in quantity and quality and go beyond ourselves to supply it to the foreign market.
He explained that there is a large fertile land that can be irrigated in the district, and there is enough water option and supply. He assured that the district administration will support the investors who want to participate in the development.
Mrs. Betelhem Hailu, the chief executive officer of World Food Agro Group, which is participating in the irrigation development, said that the association has taken over 304 hectares of land to cultivate various crops, including wheat.
He mentioned that the leadership at every level has not given them support, so far they have irrigated wheat on 75 hectares of land and the crop is in good condition.
He said that permanent and temporary job opportunities have been created for around 40 local residents.
She added that they are preparing to cultivate the remaining 200 hectares of land with cotton and the other with soybeans, sesame and horseradish.
He mentioned that Afar's land grows what he has given and produces in a short period of time. He advised everyone to work together and get out of poverty.
Young Abbas Haro, on the other hand, took over 200 hectares of land and has cultivated 150 hectares with wheat and has created employment opportunities for 60 youths.
According to ESA report, the young Abbas said that it is possible to grow different crops in the area three times a year. He advised the youth to participate in the development and become independent in a short period of time to benefit others.
