It is said that it is being done to use the flood water caused by the monsoon rains for summer agricultural activities
Addis Ababa, Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa (E/R) stated that the flood water caused by the heavy winter rains is being used for summer agricultural activities.
A delegation of officials led by the Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa (E/R) visited the clean drinking water and flood prevention work in Hamer and Dasenech districts of South Omo Zone.
The purpose of the visit is to assess the access to clean drinking water in Jinka city and Hamer district as well as the river management works being carried out with 119 million birr to prevent the flood risk caused by the Omo river in Dasenech district.
The minister said that efforts are being made to reduce the risk of drought in the South Omo zone to Somali region.
He said that by balancing the excessive flow of the Omo River, he diverted a certain part of the water and diverted it to be used for various development projects.
They said that by freeing up the flooded land, the displaced citizens will be returned to their lands and engaged in irrigation and related development works.
They mentioned that in response to the floods caused by the Omo, Gibe and Awash rivers, a system will be created to generate resources by capturing irrigation and drinking water to prevent the drought that occurs in the summer months.
According to ESA, it is being done to provide benefits to the citizens by customizing the management system of the big rivers and making them use for fishing and other agricultural development activities.
