Addis Ababa, Addis Ababa, 307 hectares of land is being developed for urban agriculture, the city administration's Agricultural and Urban Agriculture Development Commission announced.

 

Addis Ababa City Administration's Deputy Commissioner for Farmers and Urban Agriculture Development Commission, Mohammad Lghani, said that 307 hectares of land, including small areas, religious institutions, governmental and non-governmental institutions, are being developed in urban agriculture in various areas of the capital.

 

He said that more than 350,000 citizens, including farmers, are benefiting from urban agriculture. He told ESA that 11,81 hectares of land has been prepared for urban agriculture in the 2014/15 harvest season and that the necessary agricultural inputs are being provided.

 

Addis Ababa residents engaged in urban agriculture said that in addition to covering their food consumption in urban agriculture, they are getting more income and they are helping others beyond themselves.

 

In June 2013, the Addis Ababa city government launched the harvest urban agriculture project under the slogan "Our food from our door".
