What is the objective of Ethiotelecom?

Ethiotelecom, which was formerly named as ‘Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation’ or shortly ‘ETC’ was established in 1945. The new company was formed to modernize the management and services it gives to the users. Ethio Telecom, currently monopolized the telecom market for about 110 million population of the country. The company claims it has more than 46 million active users. With such a big number of population being served by a single operator makes it unique.

General Objectives of Ethio Telecom:

–Providing a reliable network to its customers
–Improving customer services by applying various development strategies

The company has a motto that says “Brining new possiblities!”. While its precedessor compnay ETC uses a motto of “Connecting Ethiopia to the future!”. Even if both uses different wording the aim was one and the same. Bringing newer technologies to the users and serving the best possible way it what tehy did and doing now.

Ethiotelecom gives various services accross its channels. Internet and voice are the main services which are provided for the customers. Mobile service, PSTN, Broadband internet, VSAT and many others are what you can get once you turn your face to one of their shops. Lets look at some of the main services the company gives.

Mobile Service:

In Ethiopia mobile service begun in May 1991. The service targeted Addis Ababa residents and the service was only available in the capital city. The company has deployed different versions of mobile technologies over time. Some of the technologies are still on the market. 2G (Edge), 3G (WCDMA – Wireless code division multiplex access), 4G LTE and 4G LTE Advanced. From the list 2G is at the verge of leaving the market as it is only used for voice service. The newer technology,4G, is applied in biggest cities of the country such as Addis Ababa, Mekelle and Hawassa. While 4G LTE Advanced is deployed on in some parts of the capital city which enables users to enjoy high speed internet. The latter technologies i.e. 4G LTE and Advanced uses 3G for voice services.

PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)”:

This was the oldest services the company gives. It gives both voice and dialup internet service with a maximum speed of 64kbps. Now a days such a speed is almost only used for data services such as POS machines. Currently PSTN is almost replaced with the more modern technology named as NGN (Next Generation Network). This helps to give both voice and high speed internet from the same source.
