Ethiopia -Landslide  in the Geze Gofa area, Ethiopia on July 22, 2024.

The recent landslides in Gofa, Ethiopia, have been devastating. Triggered by heavy rains, two landslides occurred on July 22, 2024, in the Geze Gofa area. The first landslide buried several households, and tragically, a second landslide struck as people gathered to help, resulting in the deaths of at least 229 people. This disaster is now considered the deadliest landslide in Ethiopia’s history.

 

It’s a heartbreaking situation, and efforts are ongoing to find survivors and provide aid to those affected.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahimed has delivered the following message on his X account after the incident:

"In Gofa Zone, Geze Gofa Woreda, Kencho Shacha Gozdi Kebele, a sudden landslide has claimed the lives of many citizens. I am deeply saddened by this terrible loss. Following the accident, the Federal Disaster Prevention Task Force has been deployed to the area and is working to reduce the impact of the disaster."

Her excellency Addis Ababa mayor Adanech Abiebie has also delivered the following message:

"On behalf of myself and the city administration, I would like to express my deep sorrow for the terrible accident that took the lives of many of our citizens in Gofa Zone Gozdi Kebele.

Wishing comfort to the citizens and their families affected by the accident, I would like to express that we will continue to provide the necessary support together with the administration of the region."

Since the landslide happened the search for lives has continued.
