The Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Authority stated that it is supporting plastic manufacturers to produce alternative products that replace prohibited plastic bags.

The authority said that if manufacturers engage in producing products that replace single-use plastics, they will not face economic problems.

The recently approved Dry Waste Management and Disposal Directive by the City Council does not include provisions that say "#Plastic_Factories_Close" or "Do not use plastic at all." The authority clarified that the directive only prohibits single-use plastic bags.

However, the Ethiopian Plastic and Rubber Manufacturers Sector Association had previously stated that there is no such thing as a single-use plastic bag.

Mr. Dida Diriba is the Chief Executive Officer of the Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Authority.

He mentioned that when the recently approved Dry Waste Management and Disposal Directive was presented to the authority, they prepared to implement the outlined provisions.

Mr. Dida said that as an authority, they are carrying out many tasks to reduce waste in Addis Ababa and its surroundings. However, he noted that due to the long-standing accumulation of waste in the city, they have not been able to achieve the desired level of results.
