Many people in Somalia are confident that President-elect Donald Trump will be the first US country to recognize self-proclaimed Somaliland, which declared independence 33 years ago after Somalia fell into civil war.

 

"Donald Trump is our savior. He is a wise and practical man. May the Creator bless America," said university student Aisha Ismail, her voice shaking with joy. "I doubt Donald Trump knows what Somaliland is, never mind where it is," said Abdi Mahmoud, a Mogadishu-based intelligence analyst. Powerful and influential Republicans are pushing the same idea. Congressman Scott Perry said last month that the US will introduce a bill to give formal recognition to Somaliland. The US has a plan to transfer Djibouti's declining relations to Somaliland.
