 Three Chinese arrested for illegal mining in Democratic Republic of Congo 

 

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, as efforts to prevent illegal mineral trafficking are increasing, three Chinese nationals who are currently involved in illegal mining have been sentenced to 7 years in prison each. 

 

The three Chinese nationals accused of illegally exploiting mineral resources in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been ordered to pay 600,000 US dollars in addition to their prison terms, according to the country's court. 

 

This case is the first foreign nationals to be accused of illegal mining and trafficking in the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the accused are said to be without the recognition and approval of the authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 

 

In addition, the defendants were found guilty of fraud, money laundering and robbery. It is said that it is not clear whether they will remain in the eastern city of Bukavu where they were arrested or will be transferred to another place. 

 

It is said that the individuals were arrested on January 4 with 10 pieces of gold of different sizes and 400,000 US dollars in cash. Lawyers for the defendants said they plan to appeal the verdict. Arson Mwaka, one of the defendants' lawyers, told The Associated Press by phone that "our clients are not satisfied with the verdict."
