In Addis Ababa, at least 500,000 existing electricity meters will be replaced with modern meters in the coming year, it was announced.
It has been stated that the existing meters will be completely replaced with modern meters in a phased process.
The Ethiopian Electric Service indicates that the new meter, which has so far been in the trial phase, allows customers to know their electricity consumption from where they are.
Mr. Zerihun Abebe, the head of the electric network control at the utility, stated that the modern #meters also include a system that allows customers to use cards they top up via their phones, without needing to go to institutions.
It is said that about 400,000 of the electric service customers in Addis Ababa use a pre-paid card to obtain the service.
Mr. Zerihun mentioned that there are frequent complaints regarding this pre-paid card service.
He added that the modern meters are expected to eliminate these complaints.
