The Talented New Rising Start Selamawit Yohannes - Bel Jalo

According to Memre, a resident of Lume Woreda in East Shoa Zone, in the past, they used to grow wheat only during the rainy season.

He told the BBC he had grown onions and tomatoes during the summer months because their fields needed water.

But three years ago, they decided to plant a summer crop of wheat, saying, 'Why not start something new?'

“I started making summer wheat on my own initiative. At that time no one started sowing wheat in the summer. Thank God I have succeeded, ”said Memre.

He added that the production of summer wheat is increasing year by year.

Like Memre, Engeda Birru, a farmer in Lume Woreda, says he has obtained good wheat production through summer irrigation.

He said he had received 320 quintals of wheat from six hectares of land this year alone.

He said the summer wheat is more profitable than the winter crop.

Memre, who planted wheat on just one hectare in the first cropping year, has increased it to five and a half hectares this year with the support of the government.

Farmers say summer wheat is more productive than winter wheat, with more than 16 quintals per hectare.

According to Memre, up to 64 quintals is available from one hectare.

Explaining the difference between stopping onions and tomatoes and importing wheat, he said: “This summer wheat harvest is not exhausting. It only requires a small amount of fertilizer, and it is profitable because there are no other costs involved. ”

He said the government has received 250 quintals of summer wheat at a good price (3680 quintals).
