The Chairperson of the African Union Commission has been elected, with Djibouti's candidate, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, emerging victorious.

In a six-round election process against Kenya's former Prime Minister and opposition leader Raila Odinga, the representative from Djibouti and Minister of Foreign Affairs emerged as the winner.

It is known that 48 member states of the African Union are eligible to vote in the Chairperson election.

Among the candidates, the winner is expected to secure two-thirds of the votes, or 33 votes.

In today's election, the process went up to the 6th round before a winner was declared.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, aged 60, has been serving as Djibouti's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for 20 years. Upon assuming the role of Chairperson of the Commission, he will resign from his ministerial position.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has been recognized by the European Union for his contributions to combating piracy along the critical Red Sea trade route, which originates off the coast of Somalia.

The new Chairperson of the Commission is reported to be fluent in Afar, Somali, French, English, and Arabic.

Additionally, the Algerian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Selma Haddadi, has been elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the Commission.

Ambassador Selma secured her position as Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission by defeating candidates from Morocco and Egypt.
