Ethiopia has a plan to establish flower, vegetable, and fruit development parks, according to reports. These parks will be set up in areas deemed suitable for such agricultural activities.
The 9th International Flower, Vegetable, and Fruit Producers and Exporters Expo opened yesterday at the Millennium Hall.
It has been 20 years since Ethiopia began exporting flowers, vegetables, and fruits to international markets. During this time, the sector has shown significant progress, as noted by various stakeholders.
In terms of foreign currency earnings, the sector ranks second only to coffee. It has also created job opportunities for over 200,000 citizens.
However, Agriculture Minister Dr. Girma Amente stated that Ethiopia has not yet reached the desired level relative to its potential. He emphasized efforts to modernize the flower, vegetable, and fruit sector during his speech at the opening of the 9th International Expo.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Horticulture, Melese Mekonnen, announced that a national strategy for flower, vegetable, and fruit development has been prepared. This strategy aims to enhance the efficiency of production by smallholder farmers and large-scale investors.
The Minister of State also confirmed plans to establish flower, vegetable, and fruit parks, similar to industrial parks, in areas suitable for such development.
Nega Mekonnen, Chairman of the Ethiopian Horticulture Producers and Exporters Association, stated that Ethiopia’s flower, vegetable, and fruit sector is growing with the involvement of the government and all stakeholders.
The expo, held at Millennium Hall and continuing until April 3, 2025, features over 40 companies from 140 countries.
