The British government announced in a press release today that it will provide support to areas affected by drought and war in Ethiopia and has allocated 16.6 million pounds for this purpose.
British Development Minister Andrew Mitchell said that the aid will be used to help people who are at risk of suffering due to drought and war, and that more than 600,000 people will benefit.
It was announced that the allocated funds will be made available to citizens in need of humanitarian assistance in Oromia, Tigray, Amara and Afar regions.
It is said that 11.6 million pounds of the allocated funds will be made available to 250 thousand people who are in great difficulty through the development safety net program.
The press release mentioned that the money will be collected from charitable organizations and international partners.
The remaining 5 million pounds will be provided through the World Food Programme, which will be used to provide nutrition programs for 23,000 pregnant and lactating mothers and 42,000 students in 75 schools.
It was pointed out that the current support allocated by the British government to Ethiopia is an expression of the long-term friendship between the two countries.
It was mentioned in the press statement that the British government's support for Ethiopia this year is 49.2 million pounds.
