Ethiopia has announced its move to implement a circular economy system, designed to ensure that products and materials are environmentally sustainable and reusable. This model aims to curb local pollution, create jobs, and boost economic growth.

The country has already initiated projects in this area. Engineer Lelise Neme, Director General of the Environmental Protection Authority, highlighted one key example: the ongoing work to convert waste from households and industries into valuable resources.

She explained that the system is a process for reusing the waste generated from everyday products. It specifically focuses on promoting the recycling of materials used across various sectors, including agriculture and manufacturing.

To legally anchor this framework, Ethiopia will soon unveil a national Circular Economy Roadmap. The Director General noted that this roadmap will be instrumental in partnering with private institutions to develop products that are both reusable and ecologically sound.

Highlighting the scale of the opportunity, Engineer Lelise pointed out that a single person can generate up to two kilograms of waste per day from their home. Repurposing this waste on a national scale, she said, would not only protect the environment but also significantly contribute to job creation.

This commitment was further demonstrated with the recent launch of a program based on the African "Udet" circular economy principles, which focuses on applying environmentally compatible and reusable products.

The roadmap was prepared by the Environmental Protection Authority in collaboration with GIZ, Norwegian Church Aid, African Circular, and Reach for Change.

To ensure the system's full implementation, support from international institutions will be secured. This is specifically aimed at providing the necessary financing to encourage the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that are central to the recycling and waste repurposing sector.
