Previously, luxury vehicles such as Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Ford, and Cadillac were well-known domestically and defined the appearance of the streets. At the time, these cars were symbols of prestige and capability.

Now, however, that is rarely seen.

Today, the identity of the city is largely represented by Toyota models like the Land Cruiser and Corolla, as well as the rapidly expanding presence of Chinese-made BYD vehicles.

Particularly following restrictions on fuel-powered household vehicles, Asian—and especially Chinese—cars are appearing on the streets in growing numbers.

We asked Orbis Company, which has been importing European vehicles and brands like Mercedes-Benz and Renault since the late 1950s, why these previously dominant brands have conceded market share to companies like BYD.

Mr. Samson Dimbasa, the company's manager, explained that while demand for these vehicles still exists in the market, the shift in the market's character is primarily due to pricing.

European and American brand vehicles, which have been known in the Ethiopian market for over 75 years, are still being produced. They are also increasingly available as electric models in various markets. However, European-made electric vehicles are not commonly seen in the Ethiopian market.

Mr. Samson, the manager of Orbis, states that the reason for this is the strict requirements European manufacturers impose, particularly regarding the availability of charging infrastructure, before they are willing to supply vehicles to countries like Ethiopia.

Having reached its 75th year of importing vehicles like Mercedes-Benz and Renault into Ethiopia, Orbis has informed us that it is currently making efforts to introduce European-made electric vehicles.

We have also learned that Orbis is now importing FUSO trucks for last-mile freight services and Mercedes buses capable of transporting 40 people.
