On Meskerem 22, 2011 (Ethiopian Calendar), corresponding to October 2, 2018, it was announced that Ethiopia is set to implement a circular economy system. This system is designed to ensure that products and materials used for services are environmentally compatible and can be reused multiple times.
The system is said to prevent local pollution, promote job creation, and contribute to the economy. It was reported that Ethiopia has already begun work in this area.
Engineer Lelise Neme, the Director General of the Environmental Protection Authority, cited one clear example: the ongoing efforts to transform waste collected from residential areas and industries into valuable resources.
She explained that the system is a process that allows us to reuse the waste from products we use in our daily lives. It particularly involves encouraging the recycling of items used in various industries, agriculture, and manufacturing.
The Director General also indicated that Ethiopia will soon unveil its Circular Economy Roadmap. This roadmap will facilitate collaboration with private institutions to ensure that products are reusable and environmentally compatible.
The Director General stated that an individual generates up to two kilograms of waste per day from their household. Given the country's population, she said that if such waste is repurposed through these methods, it would not only benefit environmental protection but also contribute to job creation.
Yesterday, Ethiopia launched a program that implements the principles of the African Circular Economy or "Udet," focusing on the application of products that are environmentally compatible and reusable.
The roadmap was prepared by the Environmental Protection Authority in collaboration with GIZ, Norwegian Church Aid, African Circular, and Reach for Change.
It is stated that to ensure the system is fully implemented, support from international institutions will be secured. This support is specifically aimed at providing the necessary financial resources to encourage Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) engaged in recycling waste.
