Addis Ababa, September 29 Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that the management and stakeholders should work with determination in the process of going beyond wheat self-sufficiency to export.
The Prime Minister has started the 2015 summer irrigated wheat cultivation in Tulu Guled district of Somali region today.
In the programme, Prime Minister Abiy said that the history of Ethiopia will be changed by the sweat of its children and he said that the developing wheat is an indication of the change in the history of Ethiopia and wheat.
He also said that the management and the stakeholders should work with determination in the process of exporting beyond self-sufficiency in wheat.
On his part, the Minister of Agriculture, Umar Hussain, stated that a goal is being set to produce twice as much wheat as last year by using irrigation.
He reminded that the result was due to the efforts of the leadership at all levels and said that the cooperation should continue.
The head of government of Somali Region, Mustafa Mohamed, stated that only 10 percent or 847 thousand hectares of the arable land in the region is under cultivation and said that it is planned for the region to supply 2 million quintals for the export of wheat that will start this year.
Ethiopia will cultivate 1.3 million hectares of land with summer irrigated wheat in two rounds this year.
Out of this, 52 million quintals of production is expected to be available.
Every year, the land used for summer irrigated wheat production is growing sixfold.
