Ato Shimelis Abdisa stated that 81 irrigation development projects are being built in Oromia region with 13 billion birr.
Addis Ababa: The Governor of Oromia Region, Shimels Abdisa, said that 81 small and medium irrigation projects are being built for 13 billion birr, which will free the region's agriculture from dependence on rain.
He pointed out that the drought caused by climate change has caused great damage to livestock and crop cultivation in the region, especially in Borena, East and West Guji, East Bale and Bale Zone, East and West Hararge and told ESA that the drought is still causing damage.
We can deal with this problem not by waiting for natural rain, but by building small and medium irrigation dams on a large scale, when we are able to produce crops and animal fodder in abundance even in the summer, Ato Shimelis said.
He said that this will not only cope with the effects of the drought, but also ensure food security and free the pastoralist community from exploitation in a sustainable way.
He also said that it will play a key role in bringing the fertile lands in the lowlands of the region into development. He explained that in addition to the development of animal resources that the pastoralists have monopolized, it is being done with the goal of transferring it to semi-farmers.
He said that the state government is planning to build more than 250 small and medium irrigation projects in the next four years.
He said that this not only frees the region's agriculture from the dependence on natural rains, but also cultivates other major crops and animal fodder in addition to wheat in summer in all zones.
