It has been announced that Ethiopia's medicine regulatory system, which controls medicines, has been evaluated by the World Health Organization and its improvement by one level has been announced.

 

It was announced that Ethiopia, according to the World Health Organization's global classification of National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs), has reached Maturity Level 3.

 

It has been stated on a joint press release by the Ethiopian Food and Medicine Authority and the Ministry of Health that this recognition has many benefits.

 

The State Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, stated on the platform that this recognition was achieved after WHO auditors conducted a document assessment on eight functions and found a good level of performance.

 

The Director General of the Ethiopian Food and Medicine Authority, Mr. Heran Gerba, also stated that this result will help and encourage the regulatory agency to provide safe, effective, and high-quality medical products to the public.

 

It was raised on the platform that this recognition will also help build public trust in Ethiopia's medicine regulatory system.

 

The World Health Organization uses global best practices and standards as benchmarks to evaluate and place countries' regulatory authorities on a level from one to four.

 

The highest level is Level 4, and it has been announced that Ethiopia has now achieved Level 3.

 

It is said that among African countries, including Ethiopia, only 9 have reached this Maturity Level 3.

 

Dr. Mekdes also indicated that the capacity of domestic medicine manufacturers is growing.

 

They also pointed out that, of the total medicine supplied by the government, 42% is now supplied by domestic manufacturers.
