Wealthy individuals who receive and distribute the fish production from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) have been called upon to enter the market.
It has been reported for some time that significant fish production is being obtained from the artificial lake created by the dam's construction.
The Benishangul-Gumuz Region, where the dam is located and which oversees the majority of the fish production, reported that in 2017 alone, 5,895 tons of fish were produced.
Although the fish production from the dam could reach all of Ethiopia, it is said that the distribution has so far been limited to a confined route, and wealthy individuals are needed to bring it to the market.
Furthermore, we have heard that because fish is perishable by nature, wealthy individuals are needed who can provide refrigerated vehicles and, by organizing the local community for production, can supply the fish at a competitive price.
Dr. Birhane Tufa, who is the Deputy Head of the Animal and Fishery Resources Development Sector in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region Agriculture Bureau, stated that Elfora Agro Industry, which is part of the MIDROC Investment Group, has recently entered this work.
It is said that over 849 youth in the area have been organized into 72 associations, and 31 of these have entered the fishing business.
The official said that after this, more producer youth are being organized and prepared; the product is abundant; and if investors wishing to engage in this sector come, they will work to connect them with the producers.
Recent information released by the Ministry of Agriculture shows that the site has developed a production capacity of 14,000 kilograms of fish per day.
Dr. Birhane, who states that the fish products from the GERD are very large in volume, pointed out that the fishing gear problems the fishermen have have not yet been resolved.
To solve the repeatedly mentioned problem of fishing boats, we provided 55 boats to the GERD in 2017; of these, 5 are motorized while the remaining 50 are wooden boats; however, they stated that this is insufficient compared to the vast production potential.
When the dam's fish production capacity was discussed at various times, it was said to be 8,000 tons per year, and there is also a study suggesting 22,000 tons per year; but they also indicated that another study is needed to determine the current actual production capacity.
