Illegally stored fuel was seized at unfinished stations

Injibara City Administration and North Mecha Woreda of Amhara State have seized illegally stored fuel at unfinished gas stations, according to the state's Trade and Market Development Bureau.

 

Tafere Yimer, Director of Trade Competition and Consumer Protection Bureau, told ENA that the fuel was seized by a team comprised of bureaus, zonal, woreda and city administrations.

 

According to Injibara City Administration, 184,000 liters of fuel was found at the unfinished station.

 

About 46,000 gallons [46,000 L] of gasoline was used, and the rest was diesel.

 

Similarly, in West Gojjam Zone, North Mecha Woreda, a special place called Guncha was found to have been stored illegally in four places.

 

He explained that the hidden oil was supplied by a gas company and that it had been discovered at two unfinished gas stations.

 

"The stations have not yet been legally recognized without a building permit from the zonal, woreda and city administrations and have only met storage standards," he said.

 

He explained that the fuel was stored in an unfinished, unmarked and unsafe manner and that it was stored in an unsafe manner.

 

"The government will hold them accountable for illegally stockpiling oil subsidies," he said.

 

According to the director, the bureau has so far taken action from 22 warning stations that have been involved in illegal activities, ranging from written warnings to packaging.

 

Tsehaiineh Bogale, head of the Awi Nationality Administration's Trade and Market Development Department, said:

 

"We have started packing and warning against oil smuggling in collaboration with the woredas," he said.

 

He said the oil will be seized under the law and will be subject to the decision of the judiciary.

 

He urged those involved in the sector to refrain from their actions and do their part to ensure the successful implementation of the proposed oil renovation on July 1, 2022.
