It is planned to collect more than 3 billion birr for road maintenance in Oromia region

Addis Ababa, February 22, 2015 (FBC) The Oromia Regional Roads and Logistics Office announced that it plans to repair 20,242 kilometers of roads by collecting more than 3 billion birr from the government, public and various gifts in three years.

The Bureau has informed Fana Broadcasting Corporate that the Oromia Roads Fund Proclamation No. 224/2012, Regulation 223/2013 and Directive 01/2014 came into operation in the current fiscal year in order to meet the needs of the community by maintaining road safety in the field of road maintenance.

It is said that the purpose of the fund is to cover the expenses needed to repair, improve, manage and ensure the safety of the gravel roads of the region, other than those repaired by the federal government road fund.

According to the deputy head of the office and the head of the road management department, Engineer Tamenen Tadese, the work of repairing and improving roads to make them last for a long time is not done by the government alone.

As a result, it was found necessary to establish a road fund to have a permanent financial source for the repairs, and the Oromia Roads Fund has been put into operation, he said.

He also stated that there is no maintenance budget for the roads built by the International Rural Access Program (EURAP) and that the service provided by the roads has a higher traffic flow than expected.

The deputy head of the office said that the roads have been damaged because they have been used for many years. He pointed out that there is an increase in public demand for the roads to be repaired so that they can provide better service.

He said that it is planned to collect more than 498 million 290 thousand Birr from the zones in the region in 2015 based on the plan to repair roads made by Europe by collecting fixed income from the people and stakeholders of the region.

Engineer Tamen told Fana Broadcasting Corporation that 4,334 kilometers of roads are being repaired.

In order to achieve the plan, the office has called on officials at all levels in the region, stakeholders and other members of the society to contribute money, knowledge and energy.
