A national peace conference organized through the Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council is scheduled to take place in two weeks, it was announced.

The conference will be held at the federal level in Addis Ababa on Nahase 29, 2017 E.C., it is stated.

Institutions will be given assignments; they will be evaluated on the progress of the tasks they were assigned. All stakeholders are called upon to participate, explained Mr. Ahmed Hussein, President of the Council.

The official stated that if community institutions, including religious institutions and elders, participate in the peace conference, the desired peace can be achieved.

Although parties engaged in war may not be directly included as part of the conference, pressuring them to become aware of the conference's outcome is one method and our mission, they said.

Responding to the point that there are annual peace calls during the month of Pagume but no lasting change has been observed, the official said this one is different. It is not an annual conference prepared quietly; it involves giving assignments to everyone.

Regarding the new draft law for civil society organizations that is being prepared, the officials who were questioned stated: "We have worked to ensure the draft is improved from its initial restrictive content. However, as it has not yet been approved, we are still discussing it; there are parts that need amendment," the officials stated.

It is said that the national conference being organized by the Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council will serve as input for the National Dialogue Commission.
