Addis Ababa, Regional Government Communication has announced that efforts are being made to provide humanitarian assistance in the drought affected areas in the southern region.
The head of the South Region Government Communications Office, Mrs. Senait Solomon, said that efforts are being made to provide humanitarian aid to the people affected by the drought in the low-lying districts of the region.
He explained that according to the direction set by the Regional Disaster Risk Management Council, multi-faceted works are being implemented to rehabilitate citizens who need urgent support.
The official said that more than 2 million citizens in the region need urgent support and explained that more than 900 thousand citizens have benefited from the food security program.
He pointed out that the state government has allocated 100 million birr to support the problem and pointed out that non-governmental organizations and the community are contributing to the problem.
They said that support was also given to Konso Zone, Burji, Amaro, Ale, Derashe special districts as well as Uba Debre Tsai, Gerese and Abalaabaya districts.
Apart from this, Siraro Badewacho, Atote Ulo and Marekou districts are also being carried out.
They also mentioned that the Federal Disaster Risk Management and Non-Governmental Organizations are paying attention and providing support to drought-affected areas in Konso and South Omo Zone.
According to the communication information of the state government, the official said that the humanitarian support being given is not enough in view of the scale of the problem and said that the work of providing more food grains will continue.
Regarding the supply of clean drinking water, the official said that he was able to provide drinking water bots in Konso Zone 3 and South Omo Zone 3.
In terms of health, he mentioned that efforts are being made to ensure that those affected by the drought receive appropriate health services, and food services are being provided in schools.
He also explained that 40 million Birr has been allocated to provide compensation seeds to the farmers in areas affected by drought in the past.
