The Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority announced the removal of substandard products worth over 200 million Birr.

We have also heard that more than 2,000 enterprises responsible for this problem have been penalized.

The Authority made this announcement today during an event where it rewarded its staff for these outstanding results and also introduced new uniforms designed for better service delivery.

The Authority, which is responsible for ensuring the safety of food and medicine provided to the public, reported that during the past 2017 fiscal year, it took measures ranging from financial penalties to legal action against more than 2,490 enterprises that created quality and safety deficiencies in food and beverages during storage, production, and sale.

Mrs. Muluembet Tadese, Chief Executive Officer of the Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority, informed us that food items worth 200 million Birr collected from these enterprises were destroyed.

Specifically, regarding food products found to be substandard, Mrs. Muluembet, who frequently hears warnings from the Authority listing the names and types of these products and stating "Do not use these products as they are substandard," questioned why the problematic products aren't simply collected from the market instead of just issuing warnings. She stated that the federal Food and Medicine Authority is the body that should order this, and that if ordered by the Authority to collect them from the market, they will do so.

On another front, Mrs. Muluembet said that similar restrictive measures were taken against over 300 pharmacies and other enterprises involved in the supply and sale of medicines, based on the Authority's control activities on pharmaceutical products.

To enhance the control work and to easily identify staff members engaged in control activities, the Authority has prepared uniforms for more than 1080 employees. The Authority stated that henceforth, staff should know that they are not allowed to work without their uniforms.
