The Mona Lisa painting, which was stolen from the highly secured museum where it was kept, was recovered on this day in 1903 E.C.

Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, famous worldwide, was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The disappearance of the Mona Lisa created a shockwave that gripped all of France.

For two years, its whereabouts remained unknown.

Some speculated that Germans had stolen it to humiliate France.

Others theorized that an experienced thief did not steal it, because a professional thief would know that stealing the Mona Lisa could entail great risk and would not dare. Investigators with professional expertise pursued the case day and night.

But for two years, they couldn't find any clue.

As was later confirmed, the Italian Vincenzo Peruggia was the one who stole the Mona Lisa.

He himself revealed the hiding place; it wasn't discovered otherwise.

Peruggia, who had previously been employed at the Louvre Museum, knew the structure of the case containing the Mona Lisa.

His job at the museum involved cleaning paintings and maintaining their cases.

On the day of the theft, he put on the staff uniform and, before the other employees arrived, approached the Mona Lisa without drawing attention.

He removed the painting from its case and hid it under the long smock he was wearing.

He left the case there among the paintings by beginner artists.

He hid the Mona Lisa in his bedroom.

His motive for the theft was a sense of patriotism rooted in his Italian identity.

According to his belief, although the Mona Lisa was the work of the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci, it had been looted by the French King Napoleon, and he objected to France possessing it.

Two years later, art collector Alfred Geri received a letter.

The letter was signed under the name "Leonardo" and stated that the Mona Lisa was in Florence and hinted it would be returned if money was paid.

The French quickly provided the money.

The person who wrote under the name "Leonardo" was arrested when he showed up at the arranged meeting place to collect the money.

"Leonardo" turned out to be Peruggia.

There was joy that the Mona Lisa was found in its original condition.

It was returned to its original place in the Louvre Museum and is still kept with great care. The Mona Lisa receives high-level protection assisted by technology.

It has been insured for 100 million dollars since 60 years ago. At the current exchange rate, this amounts to one billion dollars.

Considering that Peruggia's motive was patriotism for his country, he was sentenced to one year in prison and was released after seven months.

It has been 114 years since the Mona Lisa was stolen and recovered.
