In Addis Ababa, an average of 7,183 drivers are fined daily by traffic police alone for violating traffic regulations.
This figure does not include those fined by other entities for traffic regulation violations.
Over the past six months, more than 1,293,000 drivers have been fined by traffic police members alone for various traffic regulation offenses. This indicates that 7,183 drivers are penalized each day.
On another note, the Addis Ababa Police have stated that they will conduct strict enforcement against vehicles moving with bent, faded, scratched, or generally unclear license plates. In the month of Tir (January) alone, more than 2,100 drivers were fined during inspections targeting vehicles with unclear license plates.
Although various traffic regulation violations are cited as reasons for the increasing road traffic accidents in Addis Ababa, the police have explained that the proliferation of vehicles with unclear license plates poses not only a risk of accidents but also a growing threat of crime.
While legal actions are being taken against vehicles with bent, faded, or scratched license plates, the police have acknowledged that they have not been able to address the issue to the desired extent. Nevertheless, they have affirmed that they will now implement stricter enforcement and oversight measures.
For drivers operating vehicles with unclear license plates, a fine of 1,500 birr is imposed for a first-time offense.
