Ethiopian Woman Who Was Put Up "For Sale" Speaks Out After Being Freed for 700,000 Birr
A few weeks ago, an Ethiopian woman named Neima Jemal, who was put up "for sale" in Libya, has revealed that she was freed after 700,000 birr was paid on her behalf.
Neima, who was seen in photos and videos with her mouth gagged with cloth and in visible distress, explained that the money was collected from Ethiopia through her family and sent to Libya. She stated that her captors released her two days ago after the payment was made and brought her to the city.
Although there were many people, including herself, held in the location where she was detained, she clarified in an interview with the BBC that only a "limited number of people" who had money paid for them were released.
Neima also expressed her current anxiety, stating that she is still in Libya and unsure of what will happen next. She said, "I don’t know what will happen after this," revealing her ongoing fear and uncertainty.
Neima, who was a student, hails from Shashamane in the Oromia region. She left Ethiopia through Addis Ababa and Gondar, believing she was being taken to Libya for work.
She further shared that two Ethiopian men she knew from Addis Ababa lost their lives in the Sahara Desert due to thirst.
Neima urged others considering migration to stay in their home country, warning, "It is better for them to stay in their own country. On the journey, there is disease, there is death. Many of my friends have died on the way."
