We hear messages saying, "Their quality standards are not met, it’s unclear who produced them, so don’t use them." However, these products are neither collected from the market nor are the offenders seen being penalized. The products reappear in the market under a different name and appearance.
How is oversight conducted? We asked the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority.
Mr. Mulatu Tesfaye is the Executive Officer for Food Inspection and Law Enforcement at the Authority. He stated that although the Authority provides information to prevent spoiled or substandard products from reaching the market and being used by the public, some producers rename these products and reintroduce them to the market.
He explained that because they are unable to identify the manufacturers or distributors involved, they are forced to take action only against the products themselves. Mr. Mulatu noted that when the Authority bans certain products from being sold, producers or distributors rename them and reintroduce them to the market. However, due to the inability to identify the entities committing these acts, it has been challenging to take action against them.
When we asked Mr. Mulatu why no measures are taken against retailers who sell these banned products to the public, he responded that although the law stipulates that action should be taken against traders or producers who manufacture or supply banned products, this has not yet been implemented. He added, however, that in the future, measures will be taken against retail traders who offer banned products to consumers.
