A study has shown that the low pay teachers receive for their profession is a reason for their lack of motivation to teach, despite teachers being the ones who pave the way and provide direction for a generation to achieve its dreams through education.

Mr. Feleke Werku, a teacher at Debre Markos University, stated, “University teachers have the responsibility to ensure the country’s progress, but they can only do so if they can teach without being hungry.”

He added, “When university teachers are starving, they cannot think about the country. The salary currently paid to teachers is less than that of a bank security guard.”

Due to this, Mr. Feleke Werku said that teachers are leaving their profession for other jobs, noting, “Teachers are not living; they are surviving below the level of a decent life.”

The teacher’s plight cannot be fully expressed in words. How can a teacher, who is dressed worse than the students they teach and lives a poorer life in every aspect, stand in front of students and teach? he asked.

“Today, teachers go to work wearing torn trousers because they cannot afford to replace them,” the teacher remarked.

Last week, a study conducted by the Ministry of Education to identify the reasons for the declining results of the 12th-grade national exam pointed out that the low salary paid to teachers has negatively impacted their motivation to teach.

During a discussion where the study was presented to the House of Peoples’ Representatives, education institution officials, teachers, and members of the council explained that improving teachers’ living conditions is essential to ensuring the quality of education.

At the time, Professor Birhanu Nega, the Minister of Education, who was present and provided explanations, said that efforts are being made to align teachers’ living standards with the financial system.

However, the issue of teachers’ salary demands has remained unresolved for years, even though it has reached the Prime Minister’s office.
