The Agriculture Development Office of the District has informed that the Rivers of Rab and Gumara in the Fogera district of South Gondar zone have been closed to the people living in the area. The head of the office, Ato Meskar Alamrewu, told Bisrat Radio that the risk of flooding may occur in ten out of the 31 kebeles in the district.

More than 29,000 citizens living in Kebele are at risk of severe flooding, the official told our station. He explained that the Yarb irrigation project was not completed on time and due to the high level of water, it has created a threat to the Kebeles located in the lower basin.

Kogit, Shaga, Qast Hana, Abega, Shina and Dba are in danger in the district, while Wagera and Nabega are on the banks of Tana. In addition to this, the bridge road leading from Fogera to Gondar and Bahardar has been blocked by the flood, and the transport movement has been disrupted by this, the official said.

Regarding the threat of flooding, the president of the Amhara region, Dr. Yelkal Kefalen, also stated that officials from the Ministry of Water and Energy were present at the site to look into the problem.

He explained that although the district has planned a project that requires 2.5 billion birr to deal with the flood risk in a sustainable way, this is beyond the district's capacity. They told us that the community living in the disaster-prone areas are not willing to leave the area because the area is fertile and productive.

The official added that boat, food and health supplies are necessary to temporarily prevent the disaster and to deliver immediate aid if it occurs.
