The new Nile River Bridge being built in Bahir Dar will be completed in June 2015.

 It has been stated that the new Nile River Bridge being built in Bahir Dar City will be completed in June 2015. The construction of the bridge started in July 2011 with a budget of more than 1.4 billion birr. It was scheduled to be completed in three years. However, the construction of the bridge took longer than the allotted time and could not be completed yet.

 

The engineer in charge of the project, Engineer Fikreslase Orku, cited the lack of completion of the construction in the given time due to the fact that the river is not suitable for work during the winter, the corona virus epidemic and the design improvements made to the bridge. He also said that the construction of the bridge is being accelerated in a quality manner.

 

Engineer Fikreslase said that the bridge is the first of its kind and length in the country. He said that it is being done in a way that will add more beauty to Bahir Dar city. It is 380 meters long and 43 meters wide. The bridge will be able to carry six cars at a time and is being built including a footpath and a cycle path. Engineer Fikreslase said that 321 meters of the main part of the bridge, which is 380 meters long, has been completed.

 

The bridge has eight piers. Each of the nine poles carries a total of 72 hanging steel cables. 64 out of 72 piers have been completed.

 

In addition to the scheduled budget, 111 million Birr has been allocated and the lighting technology which is supported by the technology that has reached the world and which will add to the unique beauty of the bridge is being installed side by side, said the engineer in charge.

 

Four ramps are also being built for going up and down the bridge. Engineer Fikreslase said that the standard access road of the bridge, which is 4.7 kilometers long, is being built side by side.

 

He said that the bridge will be fully completed and open for service in June 2015. He stated that the new Nile River Bridge is being built maintaining the quality of construction. The responsible engineer stated that the bridge will be built to serve for 100 years as long as its beauty is preserved. (Amico)
