The House of People’s Representatives approved the draft proclamation for the Federal Institute of Justice and Law

The House of People’s Representatives, in its 18th regular session, examined and unanimously approved the draft proclamation for the re-establishment of the Federal Institute of Justice and Law.

 

The Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Law and Justice Affairs, Ms. Etzegenet Mengistu, presented the report and recommendations to the House.

 

The Chairperson explained that the draft proclamation is necessary to improve the accountability of the Institute of Law and Justice in order to create strong judicial and justice institutions by establishing an independent and impartial Institute of Law and Justice.

 

Ms. Etegenet Mengistu explained that it is necessary to establish a strong Law and Justice Institute to modernize the judiciary and justice system through research and development centered on modern technology and to bring laws into line with the current global and national development levels.

 

The members of the council stated that the re-establishment of the institute will help produce legal professionals who can provide free, independent, reliable and efficient services.

 

The members of the council expressed the opinion that if the pre-training process of judicial professionals can be carried out gradually, instead of opening training centers in each location, it would be possible to support the sector by conducting it centrally.

 

Regarding pre-training, the Director General of the Institute, Ato Zekarias Ercola, explained that pre-training is necessary so that judicial professionals, judges and prosecutors can base their decisions on people's property and lives based on knowledge and skills.

 

Ato Zekarias Ercola explained that the institute will help to address the problems facing the justice system in the country by conducting research and studies on legal issues and generating policies. 

 

The draft proclamation indicates that the institute has moved from being accountable to the Ministry of Justice to now being accountable to the Federal Supreme Court. 

 

The House unanimously approved the draft proclamation to re-establish the Institute of Justice and Law; Proclamation No. 1369/2017, according to the House’s information.
