President Donald Trump has revealed that Microsoft is in talks to acquire TikTok, stating that he wants to see a "significant portion" of the sale of the social media app. When asked by journalists whether the American tech giant Microsoft is preparing to bid, Trump responded, "Yes," and added that many companies have "great interest in TikTok."
Both Trump and Joe Biden have been pushing for the sale of TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, citing concerns over national security risks posed to the United States. As a result, the app was temporarily banned for about 17 hours before Trump set a 75-day deadline, allowing TikTok to resume operations in the U.S. However, TikTok was required to sell at least 50% of its stake to an American investor or company within 75 days. If this does not happen, TikTok will be completely banned in the U.S.
Previously, in 2020, Microsoft had attempted to acquire TikTok, but at the time, TikTok's U.S. CEO decided to sell their stake to Oracle instead and collaborate with them. However, that agreement was never finalized. Now, as TikTok faces the ultimatum of being sold or banned, the question of who will buy it and what will happen remains unanswered. Trump, for his part, mentioned that he is in discussions with several parties regarding the sale of TikTok and that a decision on the app's future will be made within the next 30 days.
When asked about the acquisition, a Microsoft spokesperson stated that the company "has nothing to share at this time." In addition to Microsoft, companies like Meta and influential figures like Mr. Beast have also been repeatedly mentioned in connection with the potential purchase of TikTok.
