2 heritages are waiting for the UNESCO conference to be registered as international heritage

A meeting of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is expected to register a total of two heritages as international heritage, one tangible and one intangible.

Andualem Girmaye, director of heritage research and research at the Ethiopian Heritage Authority, told Fana Broadcasting Corporation that there have been requests from regions to register tangible and intangible heritages with UNESCO and among them there are some that have been sent to UNESCO and are currently being researched.

In the field of tangible heritage, the "Gedeo cultural monument" sent to UNESCO was supposed to be displayed last July, but due to international influences, the conference of the organization was postponed.

From the field of intangible heritage, he pointed out that the "Eid of Shawwal" was sent to UNESCO to be registered as an international heritage. He said that it is expected that the decision will be passed in the conference held by the organization in November/December 2016.

In addition, the "Bale Mountains National Park" document has been completed and sent to UNESCO and is in the evaluation process. Once the evaluation process is over, it is expected that UNESCO will announce its registration decision in the spring of 2024, next to Gedeo's traditional landscape.

He also explained that the "Melka Qunturen and Balkat Archaeological Site" document was completed and sent in the current month, and other tangible artifacts are being researched.

He also said that the document "Unwritten Law" which is being implemented by the Somali community is being completed and will be sent according to the scheduled schedule.

He pointed out that the field of tangible heritage is where international competition is strong, the preparation of documentation requires a lot of time, resources and knowledge and only one heritage is registered for a country once a year.

In addition, they also mention that there is a situation where requests from the states do not meet international standards, and thus, after spending money, time and manpower, they are returned as "not meeting the set standards".

It is stated that it will take at least 2 years to prepare a document of tangible heritage.

If an intangible heritage expresses the identity of the people, does not violate human rights and unites the community in a good way, the fact that it is widely accepted for registration, and the fact that the competition is simplified in terms of tangible heritage is mentioned as a good opportunity.

But it is said that the biggest challenge in this sector is the mandatory condition that only one heritage should be registered by UNESCO every two years.
