 Mr. Mengstu Nguse was born in 1924 in Gondar city to his father, Mr. Nguse, Mrs. Michael, and his mother, Mrs. Dhonnesh Gobeze.

 

Ato Mengstu was born in the city of Gondar after learning the alphabet at the priest's school, when he was 8 years old, he went to Asmara with his relatives and completed his 1st and 2nd grade education.

 

With the Italians, who were in Asmara at the time, they deeply studied the profession of mechanics.

 

Ato Mengstu Nguse was introduced to cycling sport while he was in Asmara using his personal bicycle for transportation.

They took part in cycling competitions on their own bikes and won the competition with a large number of white competitors behind them.

 

Ato Mengstu left Asmara in 1944 and was employed as a mechanic in the Ethiopian Air Force.

The hard-working and strong Mr. Mengstu, while doing his regular work and studying, had a great love for cycling, so he joined the amateur youth cycling club in Gehar area in 1945 and achieved great results.

 

When Ato Mengstu was not a cycling coach in Ethiopia, he represented his country for the first time in the 1948 Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia, in the era when many African countries were not independent from the rightist empire.

Among his unforgettable memories, Mr. Mengstu said that the hero Abebe ran barefoot on Rome at the time of his victory.
