Ethiopian Heritage Trust announces closure of Dessie and Bahir Dar branches due to lack of capacity

Thirty years ago, the Ethiopian Heritage Trust Association was established in 1984, but it is not doing as well as it should.

Mekoya Mamo, General Manager of the association, told Bisrat Radio that the limited capacity of the association is not working as expected.

In Bahir Dar, including Addis Ababa; Dessie and Dire Dawa branches were closed due to lack of manpower and lack of funding, he said.

Mekoya Mamo also told Bisrat Radio that the association is currently working to open new branches in other parts of the country.


He said the Ethiopian Heritage Trust Association has 700 members in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa.

It is said that only 30% of remittances sent by the Diaspora will be legally sent

According to Wondwosen Girma, Communication Director of the Ethiopian Diaspora Agency, only 30 percent of remittances sent by Ethiopians living abroad and those of Ethiopian descent will be sent legally.

He also said that banks should make various incentives for the Diaspora to send money home legally.

It is also stated that Ethiopia is not reaping the benefits it deserves from the large number of Diaspora and it is important to explain to the Diaspora the impact of black money laundering.

Bisrat Radio has learned that an Expo of Ethiopian banks will be organized to address this issue. The expo will run from January 3 to January 5 and will be held at the Gion Hotel. It is stated that the expo will enable the Diaspora to find institutions in the sector in one place and strengthen competition among the banks.
