The bank confirmed that it earned 13.5 billion Birr in revenue, with an earnings per share of 46.10 percent.

At its 32nd regular General Assembly of shareholders held today, the Bank's Board Chairman, Ato Abdishu Hussen, presented the Bank's report for the 2024/25 fiscal year.

In the report, he indicated that Wegagen Bank secured a historic high of 13.5 billion Birr in revenue, which shows a 38 percent growth compared to the previous fiscal year.

The Board Chairman noted that the bank made a pre-tax profit of 3.85 billion Birr, which is the highest profit ever recorded in its history.

The report highlighted that the profit has a 73 percent advantage compared to the same period last fiscal year.

It was reported that Wegagen Bank's paid-up capital reached 7 billion Birr at the end of the fiscal year, which is above the minimum paid-up capital requirement set by the National Bank.

The Board Chairman, in their report, confirmed that the bank's total capital reached 12.8 billion Birr, and its total assets reached 84.7 billion Birr.

It was mentioned that the bank's deposits registered a 28 percent growth in the fiscal year, reaching 65.5 billion Birr.

It was stated that the bank's loan disbursement to various economic sectors reached 53.5 billion Birr, which indicates an 18 percent growth compared to the previous fiscal year.

The Chief Executive Officer of Wegagen Bank, Akililu Wubet (Dr.), on his part, stated that the bank has been resilient amidst notable volatilities and challenges in the sector and continues to register superior performance.

The CEO also recalled that last fiscal year, Wegagen Bank not only pioneered in the Ethiopian securities market but also established and launched "Wegagen Capital," the country's first private investment bank.

It was announced that Wegagen Bank's branches have reached 455, and the number of shareholders has reached 14,871.

However, she said, not all people who have a prominent hereditary genetic mutation for breast cancer in their bodies will develop breast cancer.

90 percent of breast cancer types are not hereditary, and Dr. Veronica states that the type called Sporadic Breast cancer develops in the absence of a genetic mutation.

Although there is no specific study conducted separately in our country, they indicate that studies done elsewhere in the world show that 6 out of 10 women who have a genetic mutation can develop breast cancer.

In general, they advise that because people with a family history of breast cancer may have a higher risk than others, it is necessary to regularly examine their breasts, monitor for changes, consult health professionals, and undergo tests as needed.

An agency had been established to coordinate the work of these utilities as they expanded their infrastructure.

Later, the task of coordinating the utilities was given to the Urban Development and Infrastructure Ministry. So, what change has occurred?

It is frequently stated that there is a lack of cooperation among the utilities expanding their infrastructure.

Many people complain, saying, "The telecom utility destroys the infrastructure it built; the road administration removes the water and sewer lines it installed."

They also question why there is no coordination between the utilities.

The complaint is also known to the utilities. The fact that they have been found giving statements at different times saying, "We have agreed to work in coordination," also shows this.

In practice, however, what is heard from the public is that not much has changed.

A so-called coordinated development agency had also been established to take on the responsibility of coordinating their work to be done in an integrated manner.

However, in 2014, this organization was dissolved, and the task of coordinating the utilities was given to the Urban Development and Infrastructure Ministry.

The Ministry office has since established a department led by a chief executive officer and has been carrying out the work.

It also has the added responsibility of verifying whether the utilities are executing infrastructure expansion projects in a coordinated manner or not, and reporting to the House of People's Representatives and the Council of Ministers.

The Ministry's Public Relations and Communication Executive told us that since the work began, the Ministry has been working to ensure that the infrastructure-expanding utilities plan and execute projects jointly.

The executive stated that the public's complaint about the lack of cooperation among the infrastructure-expanding utilities has now decreased, citing the situation in Addis Ababa as evidence.

The chief executive told us that it is now rare to hear one utility suing another for damaging the infrastructure it built.

They also said that this is also the reality in areas outside of Addis Ababa.

Mr. Ethiopia, who also stated that the lack of cooperation among the utilities has continued to cause significant wastage of resources, said that this has also decreased after the coordination task was transferred to the Ministry office.

We have also heard that the reports the Ministry office presents to the House of People's Representatives regarding its work include opinions concerning the coordination of these utilities.

Mr. Ethiopia stated that as the process is being monitored, additional corrective measures will be taken.

Wegagen Bank announced that it has launched a service that enables customers to monitor international payments sent via SWIFT using the Wegagen Mobile application.  

The service is said to primarily serve corporate customers engaged in the import and export trade sector.  

It was highlighted that when customers make SWIFT payments, they can use a unique tracking number to directly monitor the process—from the time the payment order is issued by the bank until the funds reach the intended individual or institution—through the Wegagen Mobile application, allowing them to verify the completion of the payment.  

In a statement sent to us, the bank explained that the newly launched online SWIFT payment tracking system will make the bank's longstanding international payment service faster, more transparent, secure, and more reliable.  

Customers were also informed that they can track their payments via their phones without having to wait for the funds to arrive at the bank.  

Moreover, it is believed that the new online payment tracking system will make a significant contribution by facilitating the timely delivery of international payments for their intended purpose, supporting the country's import and export trade, and enhancing efficiency.  

To access the service, customers can follow the "SWIFT" option under the Wegagen Mobile application and use their unique online payment tracking code, it was stated.

Technical and vocational institutions should provide job-oriented training in collaboration with industries, it was said.

This was said during a job fair jointly organized by Tegbareed Polytechnic College, Nefas Sil Polytechnic College, Kepler and SOS Children Villages.

It is said that if industry and vocational training colleges can provide training together, the student will easily benefit from job opportunities.

Addis Ababa Tegbareed Polytechnic College Deputy Dean Ato Mahamud Tayeb says that students who graduate from vocational institutions should graduate with better skills and qualifications in the field they studied.

This happens when industry and educational institutions work closely. Ato Mahamud said that a student who trains in vocational institutions is not only given the results of the school but also from the industry where he did his practical training.

Now, as in the case of city polytechnic colleges, they are trying to focus on a specific training field by choosing a sector to work well. This will make the institutions more effective, he said.

Kepler Academics and Program Manager Frehiwot Mane told us that they will help other colleges, including the Polytechnic College, by providing training in the activities to make students employable.

Frehiwot Mane explained that they are connecting students with industries to find jobs. He mentioned that this year, the 4th job fair was organized and 70 organizations participated.

Educational institutions should regularly review the types of education. In the past 4 job fairs, we have seen that some types of education cannot be found in the industrial sector outside the government office.

Technical and vocational institutions should provide job-oriented training in collaboration with industries, it was said.

It is said that if industry and vocational training colleges can provide training together, the student will easily benefit from job opportunities.

Addis Ababa Tegbareed Polytechnic College Deputy Dean Ato Mahamud Tayeb says that students who graduate from vocational institutions should graduate with better skills and qualifications in the field they studied.

This happens when industry and educational institutions work closely. Ato Mahamud said that a student who trains in vocational institutions is not only given the results of the school but also from the industry where he did his practical training.

Now, as in the case of city polytechnic colleges, they are trying to focus on a specific training field by choosing a sector to work well. This will make the institutions more effective, he said.

Kepler Academics and Program Manager Frehiwot Mane told us that they will help other colleges, including the Polytechnic College, by providing training in the activities to make students employable.

Frehiwot Mane explained that they are connecting students with industries to find jobs. He mentioned that this year, the 4th job fair was organized and 70 organizations participated.

Educational institutions should regularly review the types of education. In the past 4 job fairs, we have seen that some types of education cannot be found in the industrial sector outside the government office.

All private higher education institutions in Addis Ababa were assessed based on the new criteria and 485 criteria were reduced from the guideline as no institution was found that met the minimum criteria.

The Education and Training Authority said that it was forced to revise the guidelines for the third time by reducing the criteria set out in the guidelines since it did not find institutions that met even the minimum criteria set out in the guidelines.

However, it was said that only 3 out of 75 private higher education institutions in Addis Ababa met the minimum criteria.

If a decision is made based on this result, it is said that the results will be worse, so those who did not meet the criteria were given an opportunity to meet the criteria within a time limit. 

In addition to the 485 criteria that were reduced from the first guideline, it is said that there are many more criteria that were reduced to meet the minimum criteria.

According to the revised guidelines for the third round, only 3 educational institutions, 3 campuses and 17 programs (fields of study) were found to meet the minimum criteria.

It was reported that 25 institutions, 37 campuses and 146 academic fields were given one year to meet the minimum requirements.

We also heard that 62 institutions, 66 campuses and 256 academic fields were given a six-month deadline to meet the minimum requirements.

We heard this at a forum where the Education and Training Authority and the Ministry of Education announced the results of the re-registration and field observation of private higher education institutions in Addis Ababa city.

Representatives of private higher education institutions who attended the forum said that they supported the re-registration, explaining that some of the requirements are difficult given the current situation in the country.

The authority, for its part, had provided the institutions with sufficient information and a deadline before doing this; the requirements were considered too low.

Minister of Education Berhanu Nega (Prof.), who was present at the forum, said that the quality issue is not a negotiable issue and that the education sector will not continue as before.

He explained that for the sake of quality, "we do not have the desire to close private higher education institutions."

Instead, he advised that different educational institutions should merge and establish strong educational institutions.

Since the new guidelines were prepared, we have asked private educational institutions to submit their proposals and set a deadline. This is a very low and final requirement compared to the first guideline, said Ahmed Abtew (PhD).

He also suggested that educational institutions that completely deviate from the standards should be converted into commercial sectors.

Currently, there is no educational institution that the Education and Training Authority closes, but only if it is issued on its own initiative, Hiwot Assefa, the head of the Higher Education Licensing Department at the authority, told us.

The authority has mentioned that the steps to close the office are now being taken if they meet the requirements set for them to meet within 6 months and one year, depending on their level.

The official, who asked us which institutions met the minimum requirements, told us that the procedure does not allow them to list them by name.

A national peace conference organized through the Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council is scheduled to take place in two weeks, it was announced.

The conference will be held at the federal level in Addis Ababa on Nahase 29, 2017 E.C., it is stated.
